3/13/08 Class Notes Byzantine Empire     -     410CE, eternal city (Rome) was destroyed.  451-453 Italy attacked by Attila Hun, power moved to primitive  barbarians.  Barbarian Odovacer deposed Roman Empire, and ruled in its place.   o End of 5 th  century, Western Empire split into Ostrogoths (Italy), Francs (Gaul/France), Bergundians, Visigoths (S  cultural  defeat, became Christian Culture, law and government remained Roman; barbarians added to it and tweaked it. Groups were Arian Christians (Jesus not like God), Germans admired Roman culture. 500CE Francs were orthodox, then converted other barbarian tribes Early Middle Ages - 500-1000CE.  Distinctive Western European culture.  Different from Byzantine and Muslim.  Decline of roman world, new ideas /institutions. Imperial power shifted to Byzantine Empire Blending of 3 traditions: 1.) Greco Roman 2.) Judea Christian 3.) Germanic custom o Byzantine      Empire - capitol=Constantinople.   Constantine the Great- rebuilt Byzantium in 324, renaming to Constantinople, became sole capitol of empire.  Defeated by Turks in 1453CE.   o Justinian     - greatest ruler, 527-555CE.  Reformer, wanted to restore the empire to former glory. Justinian Code- Revision of Roman law.  16 men worked for 6 years compiling written law—“Corpus Juris  Cibilis”.  Standard legal work till middle of 19 th  century. aided by predecessors and wife Theodora (500-547CE, daughter of bear keeper) Together they brought new
