Unformatted text preview: Mooney, 1 Laura Mooney T.A.: Hongchuan Yu 06February2008 Organic Chemistry Lab II Experiment #11: Bromination of Trans- and Cis-Stilbene The objective of Experiment #11 was to produce trans- and cis-stilbene through the addition of bromine to the 1,2 –diphenylethene cis, trans isomers. To the ends of this objective, pyrinium tribromide was added to cis- and trans- stilbene. In this sort of reaction, the bromide from the pyrinium tribromide ion attacks the carbons in the cis-, trans-stilbene, resulting in stereoisomeric bromonium ions. The cis-stilbene reaction that occurred began at a dark orange color, butwas expected to fade to a yellowish hue after 5-10 minutes. During this particular trial, the mixture never became yellow, though it was subjected to over 10 minutes of constant stirring in boiling water. A solid did form in the tube and was collected through vacuum filtration with a Hirsch funnel. The melting point obtained was approximately 90 °C; the next week the melting point was measured...
