IR 333, Fall 2006 China in International Affairs Midterm Exam Study Guide Possible essay questions (for the actual exam, we will select one question that everyone must   answer and two more from which everyone must choose one) : 1. For more than 250 years, the Manchu Qing dynasty ruled over an enormous Chinese  empire, and when the dynasty fell in the Revolution of 1911, the entire 2,000-year-old  imperial system collapsed with it.  Discuss the relative weight of each of these factors in  its fall: the economic impact of Western imperialism, the cultural impact of Western  imperialism, dynastic decline, the tributary system, the high-level equilibrium trap, and  the moral rot stemming from opium abuse.   Make sure to use all of the sources we  consulted in constructing your answer, including the lectures, the Fairbank and Goldman  book, and the individual chapters by Hunt and Wang. 2.
