Friars within context of Medieval Universities Relationship - Friars don’t become part of universities - Connected in it so much that it is as if they are. Franciscans eventually understood what St.Dominic said - Education is necessary for the evangelizing of Europe. - Wasn’t enough to be interested in apostolic poverty o Needed a concrete, definite education. - Difficult to convert people to preach without a formal training. University at Paris - “Queen of Universities” due to its great theology Arts Faculty law faculty, medicine faculty, canon law faculty, theology faculty German Nation, Picard Nation, Norman Nation, French Nation. Problem with Arts Faculty…so theologists created their own system Conventual Studia Provincial Studia Generale Studia Theology Faculty Mendicant Generale Studia in University Towns - Order of Friars, Preachers, or Dominicans, 1216 o Paris, 1217 o Oxford, 1221 - Order of the Friars, Minor or Franciscans, 1201 o Paris, 1219 o Oxford, 1224 -
