Meter: Measures accumulation, ablation and glacial budget – all in ft/yr. Flag: Used to show flow rate. Clamp: Measures the thickness of the accumulated snow/ice at a specific location. Drill: Also used to measure flow rate – takes an initial “core” sample and you then can see the rate of flow (i.e. that the middle modes fastest, then top and finally the bottom. GPS: Measured both distance (from the origin) and elevation. 4) Equilibrium line: change factors and describe changes to equilibrium line/glacier Annual snowfall: Changing the annual snow fall even by a small amount has a huge effect on the glacial budget over all – a small increase will exponentially increase the accumulation while a small decrease exponentially contributes to the ablation of the glacier. The equilibrium line moves in response to the changes in accumulation vs ablation. When the annual snowfall was set to 3.1 ft/yr the equilibrium line was at approx 12992 ft from the origin while the toe was approx 22802 ft – making the line approx 57% “down” the glacier. When I changed the snowfall to 3.0 ft/yr, the equilibrium line moved up to 6955 ft while the toe moved to 11713 ft making the equilibrium line approx 59% “down” the glacier. Finally I changed the snowfall to 3.2 ft/yr. The equilibrium line moved down to 18832 ft and the tow moved to 31332 ft making the line approx 60% “down” the glacier. What that showed me was that at any given time, approx 59% of the glacier will be considered the zone of accumulation and as such help contribute to the overall health/growth of the glacier. Note: changing the snow fall did not affect the temp but the following did change: Snowfall @ 3.0 Depth at equilibrium line: 334.1 ft Accumulation (measured at toe): 3.6 ft/yr Ablation (measured at toe): 4.4 ft/yr Glacial budget (measured at toe): -0.7 ft/yr Flow from origin to toe: approx 90 years (32.4 sec) Snowfall @ 3.1 Depth at equilibrium line: 473.4 ft Accumulation (measured at toe): 3.7 ft/yr Ablation (measured at toe): 5.1 ft/yr Glacial budget (measured at toe): -1.3 ft/yr Flow from origin to toe: approx 223 years (55.0 sec) Snowfall @ 3.2 Depth at equilibrium line: 557.5 ft Accumulation (measured at toe): 3.8 ft/yr Ablation (measured at toe): 6.0 ft/yr Glacial budget (measured at toe): -2.1 ft/yr Flow from origin to toe: approx 313 years (77.8 sec)
