Lecture #10: Christianity’s Development of Sacraments and Sacramentalism Definition of “Grace” Reviewed =  something good that humans do not deserve  that God gives to them anyway. God’s grace is irresistible. Definition of Sacrament generally = an outward sign or symbol of an intangible  grace gift from God.  Definition of Sacrament specifically in terms of a “State of Grace” = a spiritual  condition resulting from the believers participation in the sacraments of  Christianity. This condition is called a “state of grace”.  Seven Sacraments= an outward sign of a spiritual transfer of grace. A physical  sign and a spiritual reality.  (1) Baptism is the sprinkling of infants; all people are sinners in need of  God’s forgiveness. The baptized are protected of sin  (2) Confirmation is a special mass; entrance of the believer into full  membership into the church. Only occurs after one has learned the  teachings of the Christian church.  (3) Marriage first act of sex, you have children and keep them in the  church.  (4) Holy Orders are the act of ordination of the men to the priesthood and  the designation to the convent where they will be “married to the church”.  (5) Eucharist wine and bread; Jesus’ death according to the Christian  narrative it was necessary for Jesus to die for God to forgive the people.  Points to the necessity of Jesus’ death for the forgiveness of sins.  (6) Penance is an act assigned by the priest in which the Christian makes  up for the sins they have committed. The sign is the act (offering, going on  a crusade, helping build a cathedral).  1

(7) Extreme Unction (Extreme =Life or death) (Unction=anoint with oil) a  prayer for healing. Healing is knowing you are going to heaven. Priests  prayer for healing; God will ultimately free the Christian of their illness if  not in this life in the life after death.  Ultimate Question : What does this system of sacraments say about the “necessity” of the Church; and further, the necessity of one remaining within a “state of grace” within the Church? Yes because only the priests can conduct sacraments, the  congregation needs to have a priest to take part in the sacraments.  Lecture #11 Penance, Purgatory, and Papal Power Penance Definition: is the act or attitude of being remorseful for a sin
