Technology’s Influence on Music The two technological innovations that have had the greatest impact of popular/rock music are vocal editing and guitar distortion (the fuzz). These two technological innovations have been used by some of the most successful and influential musicians in the history of pop/rock, such as the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. These technological innovations are prevalent among today’s artists. Vocal editing can range from creating an echo to completely changing a singer’s vocals (pitch, variations, amplitude, wavelength, etc). This can create a unique sounding stylistic vocal track or a completely unauthentic performance. Nowadays, almost every musical artist uses some kind of studio trickery on their vocals. In the Beatles case, a tape echo was created by layering John Lennon’s vocals on top of each other and slightly delaying one of the vocal tracks.
