Lab Number 11: The Conservation of Thermal Energy Introduction (Purpose of Lab and Hypothesis): Purpose of Lab: To verify that thermal energy is conserved in a close system by using two different metals. Hypothesis: Specific heat of aluminum and copper will be closer to its accepted value since temperature and mass are proportional. Procedure and Results: Procedure: 1. In this lab, first gather all the materials such as aluminum shot, copper shot, inner calorimeter, dip sup, thermometer, beaker, and water, hot plate, weighting scale, rubber cap and black plug. 2. Start the first experiment with aluminum metal. 3. Mass the inner calorimeter by weighting scale. Mass of Inner Calorimeter: 55g or .055 kg 4. Add cold water to inner calorimeter so the dip cup can submerged in it. Take the mass of inner calorimeter and water in it. Mass of Inner Calorimeter and Water: 220g or .22 kg 5. Find the mass of the water by subtracting mass of inner calorimeter and water from mass of inner calorimeter.
