Helping Behavior There is a very famous case that was an impetus for much of the early research on help--the Kitty Genovese Case (mentioned by Collins also) Kitty Genovese was returning home in NYC very late at night--she was attacked by a man and stabbed--many people saw the incident because of the structure of the housing (kind of a courtyard)--yet nobody came down, called or helped--the man returned and finally stabbed her to death.

Helping Behavior The question is, why would this happen? At the time, newspapers reported the incident as evidence that humans had become more callous and animal-like Social psychologist sought to understand the conditions under which such behavior might occur and when it might not occur
