Goals of this course As a result of this course, students will: Gain familiarity with the major types of biological diversity that occur at different scales, from genes to biomes Critically assess the utility of different ways of delineating biodiversity, including species concepts Develop skill in basic measurement and analysis of biodiversity Understand major theories that explain global and local patterns of biodiversity Recognize the reasons that biodiversity is critical to human survival, and how biodiversity impacts nutrient cycling, water quality, air quality, agriculture, economics, and more

Attendance: Attendance at all lectures is required. If you are not present at 12:30PM you will lose part of your attendance points for that lecture. After 12:30PM is -1/4 of the points for that lecture. After 12:45PM is -1/2 of the points for that lecture. Showing up after 1pm would result in no attendance points for that lecture. Assignments/Learning Activities: EstimateS computer exercise : After in-class training, you will be provided with data to run on EstimateS software. The professor will provide data sets and a series of exercises and questions about the analyses you run. You will be required to work on this assignment outside class hours, and turn in a final lab report on the results of your findings. Discussion and write-up of assigned journal article. Detailed instructions will be given later in the course (around week 7). Success of the discussion depends on your personal input. Exams: The format of the exams will be a combination of multiple choice, matching/fill in the blank, and short answer. Material will be based on lectures, additional assigned readings, and discussions.
