IAS 45 Reading NotesWhat factors facilitated and impeded globalizing networks of social, economic, political and cultural exchange between 1200 and 1750?Why did Europe, not China connect the world?Bartolome de Casas, Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies-Indians are portrayed as innocent, compassionate people-Seems like a one-sided account -Classic case of the indigenous people VS colonizersBernal Diaz, The Conquest of New Spain“for they were all a trick which deserved no credence, the promises of great traitors and liars who intended to attack and kill us soon as they had us inside their city and could do so in safety.”Cortes tells the Friar to induce the chiefs to give up their idols and stop their scarifices because these people with do anything they tell them because of their great fear of the Mexicans. Friar says wait until they accept the maidens so that there can be an exchange – maidens for giving up sacrificesCortes showing these maidens an image of Our Lady -> sign of evangelism If they wished to be brothers and live on terms of true friendship with them, they have to give up the wicketd idols and accept and worship our Lord God. Natives reply by asking them how could they ask them to give up these gods. If we stop making human sacrifices, the Teules will destroy the whole province with famine, plague and war. TlascalansEverything they did was to serve the Emperor, this was the way they justified conquering New Spain.Raises a question that I believe is extremely difficult to answer. What gives people the right to judge and change a certain culture. These Tlascalans sacrified human beings to their gods. The Spaniards thought it was unethical and barbaric. I understand why one might want to change or even abolish a certain culture, and why a culture should probably change. We might be able to justify our reasons for wanting to judge or change a culture, but what ultimately gives us the right. Another issue with altering or eradicatinga particular culture is the extinction of that culture itself. There are those who argue that cultures should be preserved, that we should not let these cultures die out. In some respects, I agree with this. I believe the reason the culture is falling apart is due to the
arrival of the Spaniards. Their presence and teachings are what topples the culture from the center.
