Infrared Spectroscopy and Boiling-Point Determination
Purpose: The physical properties of a compound, such as melting point and boiling point can
provide useful information which can help in the identification of a sample or to establish its
purity. The goal of this experiment is to identify an unknown liquid and the functional group
present using boiling-point determination.
Hypothesis/Predictions: I hypothesize the unknown present in number 2 is alkane compound
because of the significant absorption peaks in the IR spectrum so I predict that the large peaks
will indicate this specific frequency stretch.
Materials/Methods: I performed a boiling-point determination on your unknown liquid using a
heating plate, with a digital thermometer with a stainless steel attached to the butterfly clamp and
using a large test tube and aluminum block to heat in a constant position attached to a Tri clamp.
