Chapter 9 Notes 9.1 Design of Quality Control Systems A process of production is composed of many sub processes, each having its own intermediate product or service. Each process has its own internal customers, which is the next process or processes that receives the work output. After identifying each of the processes that need to be controlled, critical control points can be identified where inspection or measurement should take place. Operator inspection is preferred to do inspection because it places responsibility on those who make the product or service. The first step in designing a quality control system is to identify the critical point in each of the processes where inspection and testing are needed: 1. Ensure raw materials meet specifications. Supplier certification is normally granted to suppliers that have demonstrated usage of statistical process control and other methods to achieve consistent quality performance. 2. Test work in process or the service while it is being delivered. The cost of inspection is less than adding value to a defective product. 3. The third critical inspection point is the finished product or service. It is better to prevent defects that to correct them after production. The second step in designing a quality control system is to decide on the type of measurement used at each inspection point. 1. Variable measurement utilizes a continuous scale for such factors as length, height, and weight. 2. Attribute measurement uses a discrete scale by counting the number of defective items or the number of defects per unit. The third step in defining the quality control system is to decide on the amount
