Mark Buckalew 2-27-08 Paper 2 Blanken Military Structure We currently have approximately three million soldiers either on reserve or currently active . Although this number sounds high, it is only about one percent of the current population of the United States . As such, an increase in the number of soldiers will do great dividends for the protection of this country . If we maintain the current distribution of and types of weapons currently employed , an increase in the number of troops will greatly strengthen our ability , not only of defense, but also of spreading democracy across the globe. Using the “structure one” approach of an increase in combat troops , we intend to strengthen the effectiveness of the army . The enlargement of the army enables the United States to increase its presence in the global community . This increased presence includes more of a military stronghold in the Middle East , allowing for the United States to bring about peaceful resolutions in the area . Furthermore, this will put pressure on countries like Iran and North Korea to abide by international laws and levies on their increasing military powers and threats of war . Another consideration is the ability to increase the sizes of embassies and outposts in other
