Mark Buckalew Section: Wed. 6-7 Michael The Five Major Roles I Play Everywhere around me, everyday, I find myself acting different ways towards different people. I see that my behaviors and attitudes are different depending on my differing surroundings and the differing social situations that I am involved in. I play the distinct social roles of student, boyfriend, friend, son, and brother. These roles combine to form my social identity, as expressed through the social locations that sociologists have identified that connect me to the social structure of society. As a college student, I have very high expectations to go to class, do all my work, and succeed at my classes. Coupled with these high expectations are the stereotypical views of the college student who goes to parties, drinks, does drugs, has sex, and the like. Although for most these can conflict, I am not the stereotypical college student. I do not need to drink, drugs, or have sex to be labeled as the college student. I am labeled a college student for the former reasons. I would term these burdens, as they are readily expected and the social norm. This holds true as lots of students feel burdened by this stereotype. The average college student is a person who spends their free time studying,
