Unformatted text preview: Wells College, Electronics (PHYS 221L) Making Emergency Lights Their Construction and Final Result Neale Petrillo 5/10/2008 Contents I nt roduction An emergency light is a vehicle warning light, like those on top of police cars, which let other drivers know you are driving an official emergency vehicle to some kind of emergency situation. The hope behind this project was to construct a set of emergency lights with a flashing unit that would display one or more patterns. The entire project consists of four main parts: the power circuit, the timing circuit, the flasher circuit, and the light assembly. The power circuit stabilizes the voltage coming from the cars battery and changes drops it down from twelve volts to five volts making it possible to r un the digital circuitry. The light assembly consists of four LED arrays which each receive a signal from the flasher unit and change state accordingly. The flasher unit toggles each output according to two modes; mode one produces a signal such that all the arrays in a light assembly are on or off and mode two produces a signal such that odd outputs (those adjacent one another) are of different states. Power Circuit Design As stated, the power circuit was developed to stabilize the voltage and current produced by the cars battery and to produce a five volt power supply suitable for the digital components of this project. Please see figure 1-1 in Appendix A for a schematic. The first component (inductor L1) helps to regulate the current passing through the circuit. One micro Henry was chosen as the inductance because it provided enough current cleaning properties as well as a near zero resistance. The 4.7 F capacitor ensures a regulated voltage to supplement the regulated current from the inductor. The capacitance was chosen because it was the largest on hand that did not require a specific posit ive and negative connection. Ideally, the size of this capacitor would be increased to allow for a larger f luctuation in voltage. If this project were to be rebuilt, it would be appropriate to place a smaller capacitor in series to alleviate smaller voltage changes more rapidly....
