Southern Colonies: Inhabitants: Wealthy Gentlemen from south western England, also included english patriots and devout protestants. They wanted to advance their fortunes and extend the power of england. Moved to the colonies to solve england’s problems of a growing population and increased poverty due to stagnant economy. Promoters proposed shipping england’s poor people across the atlantic to work a new colony. they would mine for gold and silver and by raising the plantation crops the workers would generate new wealth for england. Roanoke was the first colony, it failed horribly, it was formed by obtaining a charter from the king. The group that obtained the charter then formed a joint stock company, A business venture founded and run by wealthy investors. 1580s: Sir Walter Raleigh tried to colonize Roanoke twice but do to ships failing to send supplies in a timely manner and infertile land the first set of men returned to england in despair. The second set mysteriously disappeared. Chesapeake Bay: 1607: under the leadership of the Virginia Company colonists moved to the superior Chesapeake Bay which was North of Roanoke.It had lush land and very navigable rivers, as well as many good harbors. but they encountered one obstacle. The powerful Chief Powhatan. The Powhatan wanted to use the English men to take out their indian adversaries on the interior of the Bay and also trade for their “Metal Weapons”, but John Smith and the Englishmen simply wanted the land for lucrative farmland. They eventually took the land and named it Jamestown in honor of King James the First. 1609: War broke out in the bay between the Natives and the starving colonists. 1613: The colonists captured pocahontas Powhatan’s favorite daughter. While in English captivity Pocahontas Married John Rolfe, converted to Christianity and weary with war, reluctantly made peace. Powhatan died in 1618 and passed his power down to his brother Opechancanough who hated the English. 1616: Colonists mostly grew corn, squash, and beans. (NO SLAVES YET). The money maker crop for the Chesapeake Bay became tobacco. King James denounced tobacco but to no prevail due to its immense profits.Due to the tobacco plant’s need for a long hot growing season the crop thrived in Virginia, but not England. That gave the colonial farmers the advantage. Production of tobacco in Virginia surged from 200,000 pounds in 1620 to 1.5 Million pounds in 1640. 1619 Virginia offers free land to anyone who paid for their own or someone else’s passage to Virginia. Virginia House of Burgesses of 1619 granted political reforms (Organized government in the colonies). Created planters, the House of Burgesses was the first representative
body in colonial america. Male Landowners would elect two leaders know as Burgesses to represent their settlement in colonial government.
