Post-Lab Question 9/20/07 1. You want to determine the composition of an allergy medication. You dissolve  the tablet and spot the solution on a TLC plate and develop it in hexane and  observe a single spot at Rf 0.05. Does this verify that only a single compound is  in the medication? What specifically can you do to gain more information about  the composition of the product? It does not confirm that the allergy medication has only a single  compound, since there can be more than one substance with Rf value of  0.05. Also the Rf value is very small, telling that the substance has not  been separated totally. In order to gain more information, I should use  mobile phase that is more polar than hexane to separate polar molecule.  After this step has been performed, I might be able to find a multiple  substance that might have different polarities. For final check, I can run
