METHODS Sample Size: A small family-Melissa O’Brien and her two children (Alexandra and Evan) Selection of Individuals: An average, every day mom who has to make the choice of whether or not her children should get dental x-rays every time they go to the dentist (even if they are not having any problems) Type of Study: Cohort Study (observational)- “typically examines multiple health effects of an exposure; subjects are defined according to their exposure levels”

RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS The dentist now gives her a hard time viewing her as a “bad mom” X-rays expose you to radiation (.005 millisieverts of radiation per bitewing X-ray) Panoramic X-rays exposes you to double the amount of radiation If exposed, the thyroid is vulnerable to radiation High risk cavity patients require more frequent x-rays Children should get X-rays every 1-2 years Teens should get X-rays every 1.5-3 years Adults should get X-rays every 2-3 years
