Aeschylus goes down in history as one of the best and most memorable greek playwrights in history. Due to his excellence in writing tragedies he was known as “The father of tragedies.” Aeschylus was also a warrior and fought in the Battle of Marathon, Battle of Artemisium, and the Battle of Salamis. He also wrote many famous plays includingAchillesandThe Persians. Aeschylus was born in about 525 to 524 BCE in Eleusis, Athens where he was raised. When he was young, he worked at a vineyard, until the God Dionysus approached him in a dream and told him to focus on the rising art of tragedies. As he got older, he began to write more plays, and eventually his first play was performed in the year 499 BCE.As time went on, tensions between Athens and Persia started to arise. Aeschylus and his brother both made the decision to fight for their home town in the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, sadly his brother died so he decided to continue writing plays against Persia whilst he was still called into military service during the year 480 BCE.
