Hume Essay Hume manages to reintroduce skepticism into to Berkeley’s system through cause and effect. All reasoning relating to experience is based on the relation of cause and effect according to Hume. Through this reasoning is arrived by comparing two matters of fact too each other. The fact that knowledge based on experience relies on cause and effects requires all future events relating to a subject to behave in the same way. For instance when the sun sets it will rise the next day, if for some reason the sun does not rise the next day all of your knowledge on the subject is refuted. This causes problems since there is no way that we can prove that events in the future will continue to behave how they acted in the past. This causes cause and effect to not be a valid form of reasoning. Any reasoning about future events is mere conjecture and the claim that the sun will rise tomorrow is no more certain than the claim that aliens will invade the earth tomorrow. The reason this allows skepticism into knowledge is it requires the future to correspond with the past. Though it is likely that events in the future will correspond to
