Abstract. A fast and efficient way of handling and storing components, raw materials, semi- finished and finished products play a significant role in the development of transport, storage and distribution design within the supply chain. One of the most important issues in storage and transport processes is the formation of unit loads. Our main goal is to give a mathematical description of a model involving the major factors of the unit load formation. The optimization process is exhibited applying the determined objective functions and constraints related to the basic tasks. Introduction In the development of transport, storage and distribution design within supply chain, great emphasis is put on the planning of low task consuming material flows. The fast and efficient way of handling and storing components, raw materials, semi-finished and finished products play a significant role in this process. Therefore, one of the most important issues in storage and transport processes is the formation of unit loads ([1]-[5]). DEFINITION 1. The formation of unit load occurs when goods, generally small goods, are formed into bigger loading, handling and storage units through the application of a tool, the unit load formation equipment. Fig. 1 In case of more related material handling systems, if the raw material, semi-finished and finished product size and weight relationships in the supply chain are appropriate, the application of the same unit load formation equipment is expedient. The formation of the unit load is designed for simplifying the cargo and storage operations as well as for reducing their frequency. The advantages of the formation of the unit load are the following, it reduces the loading time, homogenizes the load, the drive units and storage facilities, reduces the number of types of storage and transport equipment necessary and increases their utilization, facilitates the loading-transport-storage process control, simplifies the formation of cargo provides good protection, saves labor. The disadvantages of the formation of the unit load: requires a unit load formation equipment, both the purchase and the maintenance of unit load formation equipments are expensive, the unit load formation equipment may reduce the utilization of transport equipments, it is necessary to organize the transport chain of the empty equipments.
