6th Century/ 500's AD BYZANTINE Justinian 527-565 AD Nika Revolt 532 Theodora Vandals 533-534 Gothix Wars 535-552 Ostragoths Visigoths 555 East (byzantine) in denial of losing Western Rome Justinian the 1st, Justinian the great (byzantine emperor) main goal is to re-conquer the west ruthlessly taxing his people for war money made him very unpopular 532 AD massive revolt (Nika Revolt) against Justinian Nika Revolt started as a result of chariot races (most popular sport in the empire) Professional Chariot teams all named after colors Two most popular were the Blues and the Greens Government would sponsor the races Emperors were expected to go to the chariot races Each team especially the Blues and greens had huge fan clubs Clubs would start fighting and sometimes start riots because they did not get along w/each other 532 AD fight begins with the two clubs Fighting spills outside of the stadium and into Constantinople Justinian sends in soldiers to calm the rioters 7 of the ringleaders are captured (4 blues, and 3 greens)
