Bager 1 Katie Bager Engl100-06 Anne Fearman December 1, 2007 Discrimination against Sexual Orientation Homosexuality is said to be sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one's own sex, as taken from dictionary.com. Homosexuals are discriminated in the workplace, on the streets, and by having restrictions in life because they are gay. Homosexuals should have the same right as heterosexuals. Now a day it is very common to be a homosexual, or know someone who is, Homosexual behavior is not. (dictionary.com) In today’s society there is a wide degree of diversity that exists among the types of individuals, different races, heterosexuals and homosexuals. A common stereotype of a homosexual is that all they care about is fashion, and they cannot keep a relationship because they bounce around from person to person. There are, however, many other gay people, female and male, who have formed and created long lasting, sometimes lifelong relationships. (Friedman, 116) Homosexual people make up about 10 percent of the society today. For example, if one is sitting in a lecture hall with 50 people, at least 5 people are gay in the class. Nonetheless, this large group of people continues to be one of the least protected by the society and government, as well as lately increasingly targeted for hate crimes and discrimination. Regardless, that throughout the years more and more people are turning gay, and coming out, they are not protected because they refuse to change the laws in the civil rights act. (Discrimination: States Experience with Statutory Prohibitions).
