Chapter 6 Pronouns - Direct object: me, te, le/la, nous, vous, les o Replace nouns that take direct action of verb (no preposition with object) o Agrees with its noun in number/gender Ex) Il a mis le manuscript dans sa collection Il l ’a mis dans sa collection o With past participle (passé compose, etc.), the participle must agree with the object Ex) Ils ont vendu sa bibliotheque Ils l ’ont vendu e - Indirect object : me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur o Replace people introduced by a preposition (usually a + person) Ex) Ils n’ont pas dit au bouquiniste que le manuscript etait parmi les livres Ils ne lui on pas dit que le manuscript etait parmi les livres. - Adverbial : y o Replaces nouns introduced by a preposition of location (a, chez, dans, en, etc.) o Does not agree in gender or number Ex) Il a ouvert un restaurant en Louisiane Il y a ouvert un restaurant - Adverbial : en o Replaces nouns introduced by an indefinite or partitive article, an expression of quantity, or a number (de or du, de la, des, beaucoup, etc.) o Does not agree in gender or number Ex) Jean-Louis vend des livres a Paris Il en vend a Paris o If the number of expression of quantity is present, pronoun only replaces the noun (or de + noun) Ex) Il avait plusieurs livres Il en avait plusieurs. - F - Order of Pronouns o Object pronouns and adverbial pronouns normally precede the verb Subject (ne) Me/te/se/nous/vous Le/la/les Lui/leur Y En Verb (pas) o Ex) L’auteur a donne
