Global Issues & Institutions - MIDTERM STUDY GUIDE The midterm will consist of THREE short-answer paragraphs (drawn from this list) and ONE essay question. For each term, please provide: 1. DEFINITION of the term 2. An EXAMPLE of the term, or CATEGORY (what the term is an example of) 3. SIGNIFICANCE of the term – the role or importance of this term in the study of global issues. Your answer should draw as much as possible on material from lecture, class readings, and discussion sections. 1) nation-state: A nation-state is a form of state that exists to provide sovereign territory for a nation. A nation-state usually has a common language, culture, and value. This is significant because of the recent rise in globalization extinguishes sovereignty. United States, France; nationalism is the basis of a nation-state system; main resistance to globalization and source of conflict.
