Megan Aucoin Medical Ethics Paper 1 Father Wildes 13 February, 2008 Case One Ethical Study The term ethics is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group or culture such as the study of medical ethics. It is also defined as a branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and the good and bad to the motives of such actions. This explanation of ethics fits perfectly into the discussion of Case Study One. The story of Case Study One goes as a woman goes to the emergency room with abdominal pain. Doctors find that she has an abdominal aortic aneurysm. They inform her that time is of the essence and the only fix is surgery and her chance of survival is 50/50. If the aneurysm bursts she will die in minutes. The woman is an erotic dancer and scared of the scaring affecting her work so she refuses the surgery even after much
