McNearney 1 Jack McNearney Professor Waguespack English T-122 2/29/08 Analysis of Nathaniel Fick’s “Don’t Dumb Down the Military” With the debauchery of the war in Iraq, many Americans have raised the issue of an equal draft for the United States military. In Nathaniel Fick’s article “Don’t Dumb Down the Military,” Fick offers his solution to the issue. His July 2004 publication in the New York Times expresses his opposition to the institution of an equal draft. Fick claims that a lack of discipline would result from those forced into service and that the problem may be that the military is unable to accommodate a volunteer force large enough to relieve young veterans of their duties. As a former U.S. Marine captain, Fick has valuable first-hand experience. Fick uses a few different elements to convey his message. In addition to using his personal testimony, Fick also refutes opposing arguments and provides an alternative solution to the problem. One of Fick’s strengths in presenting his argument is his referral to his experience, especially as a leader, in the military. Because he has a gauge of how things actually are as a soldier, he is more able to gauge the necessity of a draft. Fick served as a Marine officer in Iraq and Afghanistan.
