Henry: Reader Response And Feminism Christmas is the most joyful time of the year. Not only celebrating Jesus’ birthday, Christmas is time for happiness, family and friends. On this special day, everyone always wants to be with his/ her beloveds. No matter how far they live from each other, they always try to back to their home, gather and enjoy the night. Christmas is in December, in the winter. But it seems to be warm with those loves. In this traditional holiday, people exchange gifts together, to show how they treasure the others. Presents become an indispensable part. But, not everyone has condition to get the best for beloveds. This fact had inspired O. Henry and “The Gift of The Magi” was born. Even though this is a meaningful story, reader respond to the couple’s sacrifice and Della’s feminism differently. Some people consider it as a precious lesson, some think of the main character as idiots. In this paper, we analyze those aspects of the story. O. Henry’s life somehow is similar to Della and Jim. He is an American author who used to take many positions and stay in prison because of embezzlement. During three year being jailed, O. Henry became serious in writing to raise his daughter. He experienced difficulties. He observed and talked to the poor. He understood their difficulties. Thus, he brought those things to his works. There is a rumor that O. Henry and his wife were also in the same situation as Della and Jim. When he ran away, his wife stayed in Texas and raised his daughter. And Christmas was

Do 3 coming she also tried to get a gift for him. After that, she was sick and passed away. O. Henry came back and awarded of that, he wrote this story. Each person will have different responses after reading the story. Most of them favor Della and Jim’s love. In their opinions, love is magic. True love can make people sacrifice for each other without asking for payback. Especially the young, who extremely believe in love. In order to bring happiness to their beloveds, they can give away everything, their treasuries or their lives. It’s nothing compared to their love. Love exists in many literary works. It’s “Romeo” (1) and “Juliet” (2) who want to be together until the Earth separates them apart. It’s “Marguerite Gautier” (3) who sacrificed for her “Armand” (4) . It’s Della and Jim who exchange their valuable to bring happiness to the other. Della and Jim was just a young newlywed. Their love for each other is real. They care everything about their partners. What husband or wife think, feel and bother.
