Sudan, Patrilineal, Polygamy -Cattle -Bridewealth: groom paying to bride’s group -Having cattle circulate among human groups, humans as well circulate among human groups. -Immortality by having descendants; everyone wants descendants B. How to get descendants? -Bridewealth payment. Not considered married unless there is bridewealth. -if they have children, man is not father because there is no bridewealth. -Husband: is a man who has paid the brideswealth to the woman C. Special issue -A woman in nuer could become a husband and a father -woman could be barren and then pay bridewealth to another woman and become husband -woman will have descendants to carry on her lineage; not a lesbian relationship. -overcomes gender and death. D. Divorce -pay the cattle back. Woman returns the cattle (repayment); tough to repay cattle. -just because woman leaves man doesn’t mean they are divorced.
