-1 3 things about Monasticism: The development of Monastery Life 1. Reactions against Constantinianism: alternative to the world. Changed with Christianity. Christianization of the empire did not necessarily produce good Christians, in fact it corrupted Christianity. 528: majority of empire is juggling between empire commitments and Christian commitments, so monasticism was a movement in reaction to this. Monastery is a way to be separate from world. 2. Bodily obedience: vows (taking a lifetime to fulfill). Giving your life is the essential quality of not only being Christian, but also being human. Dirty monastic’s felt they were more human by being dirty and unbathed. 3. No children: celibacy and the growth of the church. Christianity doesn’t spread by having children, it spreads through conversion. Today “new monasteries”: people live together, the only way they know how to be faithful. Eastern Empire
