Hello Professor and classThe importance of the principles in the APA and Ethics Code in making ethical decisions in addiction counseling are concerned with beneficence and no maleficence, fidelity and responsibility, integrity, justice and lastly respect for people’s rights and dignity. Beneficence is the responsibility to do good and to contribute to the welfare of the client. The counselor must be able to do the best they can for their client and if unable to they must be able to offer alternatives.The principle of fidelity deals with trust issues between the counselor and the client. The clients’interests are placed above those for the counselor even if this is inconvenient or uncomfortable for the counselor. In order for fidelity to work, the client has to be able to trust the counselor. Non-maleficence is defined as to do no harm (Fisher, 2013).
