Running head: Daniel 70 Weeks Daniel 9:24-27 (KJV) 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Summary This prophecy in Daniel chapter 9: 24-27 has two fulfillments …the first and the second comings of Yeshua Messiah/Jesus Christ. Daniel was praying about his own sin and the sins of his people when Gabriel brings him a two-fold (in my opinion) prophetic message: Seventy ‘sevens’, 70 sabbatical cycles or 490 years , are decreed for your people to atone for wickedness (24). Jesus was the atonement and sacrifice for our sin-wickedness. He lived a perfect holy life on earth and died and rose for our sins… delivering us from sin to receive a brand new life through faith in Him. This fulfillment points to the coming of Jesus the Messiah at His first coming. “Other scholars (e.g., Archer, Wood, Payne) believe that the decree of Artaxerxes I to Ezra in 458 B.C. (or 457) is the beginning point of the seventy sevens. If this view is correct, 483 years after 458 B.C. would result in a date of A.D. 26, the time when many scholars believe Christ was baptized and began his public ministry as the Messiah. Jesus’ anointing for ministry came at his baptism (cf. Matt 3:16); thus he became the “Anointed One” at that time, an amazing fulfillment of prophecy”. 1 1 Stephen B. Miller. Running head: Daniel 70 Weeks It is easy to see that the first decree of Artaxerxes that was given to Ezra (457 B.C.) is the beginning of Daniel’s 70 week prophecy… since the date of 27 A.D. is within the timeline of the beginning of the ministry of Jesus. Secular scholars date the seventh year of Artaxerxes mentioned in Ezra 7:7 to 458 B.C. instead of 457 B.C. Other years that some have used are simply not possible.
