Ceremony Ethnography What was your role in the wedding you participated in? My role was the best man for my brother’s wedding. Everyone in our immediate family participated in the wedding party and my parents and I stood beneath the chuppuh during the ceremony. Can you describe the overall flow of the ceremony? I would say that there were four distinct parts of this wedding. First, everyone had to arrive and get settled in Miami where the wedding was being held. This includes the week of pre-wedding events conducted with the bride and groom’s families together, up until the final night before the wedding. Next, on wedding day there is a special tradition in jewish culture. The bride and groom and all of their close immediate families sit together just before the wedding occurs and sign a ketubah. The ketubah, signed by the bride, groom, maid of honor and best man outlines the groom’s responsibilities to the bride. This is done is a back room immediately before the wedding and includes the rabbi. Following the signing of the ketubah, the bride and groom stand underneath the
