APA Style Handout 1 The Theory of Transactive Memory The Original Transactive Memory Theory The theory of transactive memory (TM) emerged from Wegner’s effort to revamp the theory of group mind (Wegner, 1987). He maintained that earlier research of group mind paid too much attention to the study of within-group similarity in members’ attitudes and behaviors (Wegner, Giuliano, & Hertel, 1985). Such a perspective on group mental behavior is overly simplistic for the following reasons… Following this line of argument, Wegner (1987) defines group transactive memory as “a set of individual memory systems in combination with the communication that takes place between individuals” (p. 186).
