Janiya Bell Mr. Savercool Advanced Critical Reading 2A 28 April, 2015 Montagu vs. Swift The two poems “The Lady’s Dressing Room” and The Reasons that Induced Dr. S. to Write a Poem Call'd the Lady's Dressing Room” are a part of a poetic duel between two poets Jonathan Swift and Lady Montagu. Both poems are full of satire and stereotypes that create the infamous tension. Even though both poems changed the face of literature, the use of word play and sharpness of Lady Montagu’s poem proves it to come out on top. Three centuries ago, Jonathan Swift described the horrors of women while Lady Montagu responded in bitingly funny fashion. The poem by Swift was everything but compassionate towards the effort women give to looking the best. It makes sense that people would be offended by his poem, so Lady Montagu published a response that called Swift out on his criticism. The Lady was quite offended by Swift's depiction of women in his poem as "gaudy tulips raised from dung".
