“Lincoln” Reflection Prompt Two years before the introduction of the 13th amendment, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. The Emancipation Proclamation didn’t help the slaves much because it helped the slaves free when in rebellion. This triggered the idea of the 13th amendment to Lincoln to make all slaves free by abolishing slavery. Since there were more Republicans than Democrats, Lincoln had an advantage where was re-elected as the president continuing his goal of abolishing slavery. With the help of his cabinet members, Lincoln went closer to achieving the ratification of the 13th amendment. The reason that Lincoln wants to win the Civil war is to get the 13 th amendment passed as a federal law. He thrives in the government trying to convince the states to abolish slavery. For the amendment to get passed in the Congress, excluding the Republicans, 20 votes are needed from the Republicans. But Lincoln realizes the reason people want to get the amendment ratified is because they want the Civil war to end as soon as possible. A couple from Jefferson City explain why they favor the president and the amendment so they can live in peace. To get the opposition party at least to think about ratifying the amendment Lincoln needs his cabinet members to convince and make peace. So to bring up the amendment to the Congress for debate, Lincoln and the cabinet made the Republican representatives Ashley and Stevens to help them get the 13th amendment debate started.
