Comd 220 Speech problems Developmental dysfluency – period of normal dysfluency where the child just studders when children are young in that window of time when they learn language they can’t handle the complexity of their grammar which is normal. Kids aren’t self conscious but speak a mile a minute. Tell parents to ignore this its not a big deal. Fluency disorders Stuttering how we determine the severity is the frequency of how it happens, and the amount of time it takes us to recover. What makes it a disorder is how much and how long. A disorder of fluency that is characterized by excessive amounts of dysfluencies in excessive duration of fluencies. Dysfluency – anything that disrupts and prevents the smooth effortless flow of speech. Types: A. Repetitions (fluent people don’t do this) a. Part-word repetition when someone says what-t-t t-ime is it… b. Whole word repetition what time time time time is it… c. Phrase repetition I wanna I wanna go shopping B. Prolongations (non fluent people do this)
