Psychology of Women Test 2 Lecture Notes -Freudians 1. H. Duetsche -studied with Freud -married to Freud’s best friend; worked in a “men’s world” -wrote influential book in 1944 (Freud died in 1936), Psychology of Women , and changed penis envy—said it is real but was not the basis of girls’ most essential conflicts and was not the fundamental role in personality development -said penis envy was a secondary development; men were powerful and there was just a natural awe women had of men -said resolution of Oedipal and Electra complex was not right; said bond between mother and daughter was crucial toward personality development, and this is the basis for our gender identity -focused on 3 central drives (Freud focused on pleasure principle), and how we negotiated them was responsible for our personality development: a . narcissism —saw a healthy narcissism; had high self-esteem, sense of purpose; subordinates are supposed to enjoy the role they were given, being a mother; you would be narcissistically healthy if you embraced all the roles women were given b. passivity —central of the 3; women naturally have an attitude of receptive waiting; her life didn’t begin until something acted on her from outside her self (Freud thought self acted on its environment); ex: women give up their name when they marry; thought we were passive as part of our makeup— believed anatomy is destiny; woman’s needs will be met as she meets needs of others, they are secondary c. masochism —saw it as a willingness to undergo suffering in order to bring children into the world; saw it as positive; thought the highest contribution women could make to the world was that of motherhood -called “Freud’s dutiful daughter” 2. E. Erikson -studied with Duetsche; was a stage theorist -came up with interesting theory of development called 8 stages of man -thought men developed personality in a state of ever-increasing separation; little boys separating from mom, then teachers, etc. to become a more independent person -thought separation/individuation was a prime marker for maturity -the theory was based on males, and didn’t have a way to fit women in -thought each stage had to be mastered before you moved on to next one -look at handout for stages 1. infancy— basic trust vs. mistrust (is environment where you live a trusting environment or is it harmful?) and autonomy vs. shame/doubt (are you constantly being criticized for behavior— can you develop sense of autonomy about self, or are you filled with shame/doubt/worried about whether you are pleasing people?) 2. early childhood— initiative vs. guilt (ability to take initiative; either learn to take initiative or not, to the degree you would develop guilt of inferiority) 3. middle/late childhood— industry vs. inferiority (child becomes busy; realize you need to work hard to achieve; feel inferior if you see others are achieving more than you) 4. adolescence— identity vs. role confusion (said it was important that
