EDUC. 4112 Response Paper 3 RUNNING THE RACE When I was in my early twenties I got a card from a friend with a picture of Eric Liddell, (sprinter from the movie Chariots of Fire, ) running as fast as he could with his head cocked back, gritting his teeth, and determination in his eyes. In the movie, Eric is running a 440 yard dash and falls down during the race, he gets up and is able to sprint back into the pack of runners and win. At the end of the race Eric falls down and begins to hyper-ventilate, a professional trainer run’s over to him and says, “Well Mr. Liddell, it wasn’t the prettiest race I’ve ever seen, but it sure was the bravest.” This quote was written under the picture of Liddell and I remember starring at the card for several minutes trying to unpack it’s message and understand what my friend was trying to say. Motivation is all around us, it’s in the eyes of our kids, the jobs we seek, the money we earn, and the life we’re all trying to find meaning in. In the argument between
