Crime - an act that violates the criminal law and is punishable by the state Criminal Laws - are formalized or codified norms, which are rules that make explicit certain social expectations about what is appropriate behavior for particular people in specific situations. McNaghten Rule - establishes right & wrong in order for people to prove a lack of criminal responsibility 1) demonstrate that at the time of the crime they were under defect of reason so they did not know the nature and quality of act 2) they were of the nature of the act but didn’t know it was wrong Conflict perspective - sees the criminal law as closely intertwined with the distribution of political power and economic resources in a society.
