Notes on The Moderns (1988), Director Alan Rudolph French 169. Instructor: Professor Roger Celestin The story takes place in Paris in 1926. Nick Hart ( Keith Carradine ) is an unsuccesful painter who makes a living by drawing cartoons for the “Tribune”. His journalist friend Oiseau, the “bird” in French ( Wallace Shawn ), is a columnist for the same paper; he thinks Paris is not ‘fresh’ any longer and wants to go back to the USA. Also in Paris live Bertram Stone ( John Lone ), a ‘nouveau riche’, who takes pride in his new activity as an art collector. He is married to Rachel ( Linda Fiorentino ), a beautiful and mysterious woman with a double life. And then there is Nathalie Deville ( Geraldine Chaplin ), a rich Parisian woman who would like Nick Hart to forge three original paintings she owns to punish her husband for his infidelities. After some hesitations, Nick Hart agrees to do the job. Forgery and deceit will lead the characters into irreversible trouble.
