Chapter 13: Sexual Communication - Sexual communication: Processes by which intimate partners share their sexual likes and dislikes with each other and negotiate sexuality in their relationship Communication in Intimate Relationships - Couples’ communication: Ongoing verbal, behavioural, and affective exchanges between partners Couples’ Communication Behaviours - Distressed VS non-distressed couples o Distressed couples: Engage in more negative behaviours and fewer positive behaviours Lower levels of validation and empathy toward each other - 4 Negative Behaviours (Predictors of declines in relationship satisfaction) o Criticism Hurtful because it involves attacking a person’s character/personality rather than addressing issue at hand o Contempt One step further from criticism Putting down and disrespecting one’s partner E.g. Eye rolls, name-calling, mean humour o Defensiveness Occurs when one partner feels he/she is being attacked and must protect himself/herself by denying responsibilities, or making excuses, or counter- complaining o Stonewalling Occurs when someone simply refuses to engage in the discussion at hand Disengaging from a conflict can be a good thing if both parties agree to end conflict for the time being But stonewalling is action taken by one person that is experienced negatively by his/her partner Non-verbal Communication - Verbal behaviour is almost always accompanied by non-verbal communication - E.g. curling of lips, dismissive tone of voice, shrug of shoulder - Pre-dominant way in which people communicate is non-verbal communication - Quality of non-verbal communication between partners is a stronger predictor of relationship satisfaction as compared to the quality of verbal communication Patterns of Couples’ Communication - Negative reciprocity: Communication pattern in which each partner tends to respond to the other with negative comments/behaviours, thereby escalating the conflict o Once this occurs, it is difficult to end it - Demand-withdraw:
