Problem 1 A physical pendulum is made from two thin uniform disks of radius R (think of thin coins) and a massless rod. Each of the disks has mass M , so the total mass is 2 M . The distance from the center of the upper disk to the pivot point is L 1 (which is greater than R ). The distance from the center of the lower disk to the pivot point is L 2 (which is greater than L 1 ). The diagram at right shows the pendulum and a vertical reference line.
