Chapter 6: Poverty, Malnutrition, and Income Inequality Poverty Problem Low Standard of Living – unable to get the basic requirements of food, shelter, and clothing Hunger – Malnutrition Psychological Lack of infrastructure  Low literacy rate Poor Health and illness Deprivation Level Probability of not surviving till age 40 Adult Literacy Lack of decent SOL : (1) % of pop. Without sustainable access to imported water (2) % of children  below 5 who are underweight Absolute Poverty Below the income that secures bare essentials Poverty Line: minimum daily income required to provide basic needs. $1/person/day $2/person/day provides consumption in excess of bare physical min.  H =  # of people who’s income is below P.L. Head count of poverty = H Head count ratio = H/N   N=total pop. Total poverty gap: Amount of money per day required to bring every poor person up to the minimum
