Significant differences characterize each coastline Very diverse and rich geography The 3 mountain ranges, give good places to live. 50% of the island is arable land (can grow almost anything) What does this mean for development? Coveted land (valuable, workable) Easy grow resources – diversification of agriculture Lots of access to water (and ports for trading) Weather can make development, industralization and modernization somehwta difficult ( constant earthquakes, constand disasters hard for infrastructure) Each region developed a distinct economic entity. Tobacco production flourished in the valleys in the west Extensive harbor facilities = sugar production Export economy (paramount to Cuba) – exporting was more important than importing
