The writer describes the apartment in detail in order to show us (the readers) how poor this couple really is when it comesto wealth and material possessions. Della seems to be having an internal struggle herself; her hairis her most sacred possession while persuading herself that she’s doing the right thing by cutting it off. Then we have a fellow named Jim. Jim has a watch which is a valued family item that has belonged to past family generations before his time. This watch is priceless, something that one cannot go out and purchase or can be duplicated. This can also be considered a conflict for him
