English 11/ Pd. 8 Hypothesis Contrary To Synonyms: Hypothesis contrary to fact, Counterfactual, A false cause After Gore lost the 2000 election the George W Bush many made the argument that had Ralph Nader dropped out of the race Al Gore would have become president. This argument though possibly true, cannot be proven and is an example of a counterfactual. The argument relies on Ralph Nader not running. Nader did run and therefore nobody will ever know what would have happened had he not run. Even with the facts that the number of votes separating Bush and Gore in Florida in 2000 was 537 and that Nader got 97,488 votes in Florida in 2000, the argument that Gore would have won is purely hypothetical.
