Frieden 1 Alex Frieden Myers/ Neely Adv. English 11 17 February 2006 Artifact Project: Dual Values of Legal Tender My artifact is a pair of United States “green backs” from the time period of the dust bowl. They are significant on both a literal and metaphorical level. Literally speaking, the one dollar silver note and the five-dollar Federal Reserve note were minted in the years 1935 and 1934 respectively, meaning that it is possible that real Okies used these bills. A corporate farmer could have paid his workers with them or a family, on it’s exodus from the dust bowl, could have paid for their Ol’ Jalopy’s gas with the bills. The possibility is very slim but the bill truly could be one third of the “three dollars a day” that “comes every day” in the tractor driver story. The shear fact that these pieces of paper existed back during the period of the grapes of wrath makes them significantly applicable to the book. From a metaphorical stand point that bills are far more interesting. It is printed on
