Ming Dynasty 1368-1644 31/01/2008 12:00:00 Period of brightness after darkness Nanjing- made the capital of china after he rebuilt it by Zhu Yuanzhang Last 3 Dynasties (capital=Beijing) Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) o Mongolian- darkness b/c they were dominating o north of China proper Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)- first ming emperor is Chinese. Ming Dynasty was the last  Chinese dynasty. o Han Chinese Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)- Manchus. o Manchu o northeast of china proper Hongwu Emperor “Grand Military Achievement” Zhu Yuanzhang (posthumous name: Taizu) Peasant orphan- sympathetic to them taken in at 16 and raised by Buddhist Monks Buddhist Religion, but also a Confucian emerged as leader of large military band- Red Turban rebellions o must rebel since Buddha is not coming soon Overthrew Yuan and declared himself emperor Reigned 1368-1398 Makes two capitals- Nanjing and Beijing.  Merciless autocrat- paranoid and kept tabs on what everyone was doing knew what everyone did and who they were. .later rulers do not do this leading to the fall of  ming dynasty.  Government and Society Confucianism (551 A.D.-479 B.C.)- basic philosophy of government set up. Would be useful  to Zhu Yuanzhang b/c of some of the beliefs.  Becomes a religion. He adds aspects of  Daoism to Confucianism.  Hangwu does not follow these virtues.
